Hey ya’ll!
I need to clear out 13-15 and recoup some cash. (I’ll spare you the reasons.)

Would this fly for the BN Marketplace?
  • I list name, size & condition only.
  • IF someone is interested, THEN I send pics, batch, etc.
  • I request an offer. If it’s reasonable, done..
Key consideration: These frags are mostly discontinued ‘higher end’ designer. A couple niche.
  • Open box pandemic blind-buys: wore once and NOT for me.
  • Open box backups I sprayed for “legit-ness“ test.
  • New open box to check batch code for brand research or to register loyalty code. (Dumb)
  • A couple of new, no box
  • All are full, minus a 1 ml or 2. Just enough for me to test.
If no one is interested if the frag, I don‘t want to go thru the hassle of pics/batches, etc.

Would this fly?
Thank you!

I don't have much BN Marketplace experience, but it sounds fine to me.

Neither do I, but like Bonnette, I think your idea sounds quite reasonable.

No, this won't fly. There is a big ol' sticky at the top of the Market Place that has the rules but hardly anyone ever reads them so I'll summarize what seems to work:
Please list where you are willing to ship, shipping fees, and whether they are included in the price.
It's fine if you don't want to post pics at first, but you'll get more interest I think if you include them.
Most importantly you must include a price. "Best offer" or auction-style sales are not permitted. Of course, you may set a price and then say you will accept reasonable offers, though mostly I hear people try to lowball you.
ETA: It is helpful if you list what forms of payment you accept: Paypal, Paypal Friends and Family only, Venmo, etc.
ETA again: Stuigi pointed out to me that the big ol' sticky is no longer at the top of the Marketplace. Now you see the Marketplace rules when you go to list something, after you click on "Post Ad."

I sell backup bottles on occasion. Just like the Brand, Name, how many oz or ml, how you have stored and kept it, around the time and from where you purchased it such as a year ago at full retail department store, online discounter, etc.

  • Marketplace rules
  • You must meet one of the following requirements to start a marketplace thread.
    • You are a Basenotes Plus member
    • You have been a member for over a year
    • You have made over 500 posts (members we feel are posting purely to reach this threshold will have their post count reduced)
    • For Split Hosts, you must have no negative feedback. If you have less than 10 positive feedbacks, you can only host one bottle split at a time.
If you do not meet any of these requirements, you may only respond to marketplace sale or swap threads via PM's.

Talking from experience, even for just 13-15 bottles, it would be much less effort putting the details/prices together, than leaving it open for 15 messages each from dozens of mostly curious window shoppers or low ballers.
Okay. I guess I will have to price them. Thanks, M.

So after all the discussion about me not having the desire to go overboard with data on my 1st Marketplace post, I ended up going full enchilada. I posted pics with visible batch codes, etc. I listed them way below market value, from what I can tell, because-hey- BNers are pretty much family. Plus, buyers here are probably less risky.

I also posted the same items in other venues at true market value and have sold quite a lot…Quickly. They have been mostly open boxes with full, or high fill level bottles. I posted them with the same diligence as I did here. I have minimal feedback in other venues; same as what I have here, so the sales were kind of surprising.

I did sell one waaaay underpriced item here, and it was snapped up immediately. Other than that, no inquiries at all. I guess it’s the type of product I’m selling. (?) I added more to the other venues and not here because it seems more effective elsewhere.

Is this a common phenomenon? Weird.

I've been selling consistently here for the past ten years or so. Unfortunately, interest in sales has decreased significantly on this forum, especially with the change to the new Marketplace that's now separate from the main forum. People have to actively go look for listings now, rather than seeing them mixed with new forum posts. I feel like traffic and overall Marketplace engagement just aren't what they once were, unfortunately (though I don't have metrics to support this). Even Splits forum sales have dropped off considerably, and most members no longer even bother with reciprocating marketplace feedback anymore. While I do still post sales/splits here, I would say that 90% of my transactions come from other venues nowadays. I would LOVE to see the Basenotes Marketplace revived to what it once was, but there are likely just too many other options with broader reach nowadays.

Grant, what say you about this? I think it's clear the changes you made have had a deleterious effect on the overall functioning of the Marketplace. When members who have been actively selling for YEARS in the Basenotes Marketplace can not only no longer sell anything, but they can't even get any inquiries from anyone, isn't that reason for action and making improvements? It's no coincidence that the decrease in sales and overall activity in the Marketplace coincided with the changes you made. Let's face it, if people can't see our ads among the "new posts" each day, they aren't going to be going to the Marketplace. It's literally out of sight, out of mind.

No, it's nothing to do with your ad or what you're selling. The problem is that significant changes were made a few months ago and nobody is seeing our Marketplace ads anymore. Our ads used to come up regularly for everyone on the board to see when we bumped them to the top. But our Marketplace ads are no longer seen by everyone on the board among the new posts each day (like they used to be). If members can't see our ads, there will be no buying, and of course that's not surprising. The Marketplace is barely breathing as a result of the changes.

Just to be fair, sales here were on the decline for a while prior to the Marketplace forum changes -- though I still feel that they get less engagement now that they're separate from the actual forums. They're more "out of sight, out of mind." There's also just less traffic to the site than there once was, and newer members don't seem to acclimate to the Marketplace here like they once did. I think there are too many other options now, such as dedicated Facebook groups, where postings get seen by thousands of people right in their feed, minutes after posting.

It also still confuses me why Marketplace feedback is seldom used by members anymore. That change seemed to coincide with when the entire site moved to the new format, a year and a half ago. I used to get feedback reciprocated on about 80% of my transactions for years. It's now pretty consistently only given for 20% of my transactions. I don't know if people have a harder time seeing the notifications now, or what.

Regarding feedback: part of the problem may be that the Marketplace isn’t a formal system that tracks sales, so it doesn’t remind buyers and sellers to give feedback, much less send links. I try to remember, but I don’t always. If anyone is due feedback from me, PM me. I’ll follow through.

FWIW, I check the Marketplace daily. It’s not hard to make it routine.
