MANCERA: "Cedrate Boise or Red Tobacco" ?

Hi all,

I am "considering" the purchase of a MANCERA Fragrance. The thing is, I have only (sampled) one of the two Fragrances, that being Mancera "Red Tobacco". I sampled "Red Tobacco" some five years ago and (according to my personal notes) I gave "Red Tobbaco" VERY high marks and recall REALLY liking this Fragrance ! At that time, I ordered thirty something samples of mostly Niche Fragrances and "Red Tobacco" placed very near the top of the list.

That being said, I can't but help wonder if Mancera "Cedrate Bosie" might be a better overall choice ? Reviews I've watch make me think "Cedrate Bosie" might be a better (all around) choice. Now, here's the deal, if I were to purchase "Cedrate Boise" I would (once again) be taking a gamble (albeit a not so INexpensive gamble) "blind buy" purchase.
I suspect a gamble on my part (especially considering the price) may be foolish on my part. At any rate, weather or not I gamble, I'd love to hear your thoughts if you happen to own Mancera "Cedrate Bosie". I have also considered buying Lorenzo Villoresi "Dilmun" (which I love) as a Summer Scent however, I have at least a dozen or more bottles of Summer suitable Fragrances (which I seldom wear) as Summer in Maine is so short lived. This of course is the reason why the bulk of my Fragrance collection are Cool/Cold/Winter weather Fragrances. Thank you in advance for your thoughts/suggestions.

I bought a reasonably priced decant of Red Tobacco a while ago, I can't remember where from.

Perhaps you can do the same thing with both and take it from there?

Own both and I'm wearing red Tobacco today. Cedrat Boise is better suited for all around wearing where Red Tobacco is a great evening or cool weather wear, not appropriate in many situations where CB would be perfect but I find Cedrat Boise boring and Red Tobacco a much more enjoyable wear.

I'm in a similar quandry but would be curious about Intense Cedrat Boise as well.

Hi all,

Well, I may have gone a lil' bit Nuts! Firstly, thank you all for your help/suggestions. Here's the deal. After doing some more research and reflection, I decided NOT to purchase "Decants/Samples" for the Mancera Fragrances. I just can not bring myself to purchase a "teaspoon" of liquid and pay thirty or more dollars. I rather apply that money to a full bottle. That being said, I also decided (again after watching several reviews) that "Mancera "Cedrate Boise" (being un-sampled/an unknown to me) would (at this time) not the right purchase. Instead (so I don't make another mistake like I did with "Roma Uomo") decided to go with a KNOWN quantity (and VERY much LOVED) Fragrance, that being Mancera "RED TOBACCO".

In addition to "Red Tobacco", I also (damn the Torpedoes, full speed ahead) ordered the following fragrances:

MANCERA RED TOBACCO by Mancera
Mancera Red Tobacco
by Mancera
Eau de Parfum spray 4 oz.

RASASI DHANAL OUDH NASHWAH by Rasasi
Rasasi Dhanal Oudh Nashwah
by Rasasi
Eau de Parfum spray 1.35 oz

POUR UN HOMME DE CARON L'EAU by Caron
Pour Un Homme De Caron L'Eau
by Caron
Eau de Toilette spray 2.5 oz

The CARON Pour Un Homme was the Fragrance that I SHOULD of purchased (a couple of weeks ago) that started that whole mess with shipping.
At any rate, I am looking forward to having another (Caron "blind buy") in my collection of Caron Fragrances (albeit a smaller bottle). I've become a HUGE Fan of Caron Fragrances.

Now, Rasasi Oudh (according to one BN member) was a Fragrance he found DISGUSTING and smelled SUPER "Skanky". Of course, once I read that review, I HAD to order "Oudh Nashwah" (especially) since it was on sale.

So, OK, I've gone a little bit crazy of late ordering Fragrances. I think this may in part be due to me trying to play "catch up". That is, perhaps a celebration of the return (for the most part) my sense of smell after nearly a year and a half.

Well dear members, at this point (as difficult as it's going to be for me) I have to STOP purchasing any more Fragrances (for awhile). Truthfully, I have more Fragrances than I could use in two life times. I will do my best to "hold off" purchasing another Fragrance (unless it's a "Thrift Shop" score) until years end.

Come years end, I hope to purchase a SPECIAL Niche Fragrance (several that have been on my "me wants" list for a loooong time).
I'm thinking either Diptyque L'Autre or Santa Maria Novella "Marescialla". If however I do feel myself weakening (the Sprit is willing but the Flesh is weak) then, perhaps then I will purchase a "decant" of (long wanted) Serge Lutens "Musc Koublai Khan" since a bottle is out of the question.
Ooh Man, I've got it bad! Thanks again all.

I feel you. I have been trying not to buy anything since January, and I'm on my fourth bottle... 🥸

I only know the other fragrances by reputation. But, as for the Mancera, you simply cannot go wrong with Red Tobacco. It gets a lot of flak around here, but I personally love it.

Hi Sal. It's funny, some Fragrances just work (and are LOVED) by some folks and other folks, not so much. I've waited FIVE years before pulling the trigger on purchasing a bottle of Mancera "Red Tobacco". I simply LOVE this Fragrance! In addition, I recently purchased another (on sale) Fragrance (again waited FIVE years for this one as well) that being "Montecristo". I should be good to go for quite awhile (broke but, good to go).

Well, I think you made the best choice by buying a fragrance you know you really like. I don't blind buy.....it just makes no sense to me unless the fragrance is relatively inexpensive.

I'm very picky and when I sample fragrances, I've found I only like about 10% of them enough to want to buy a bottle. With odds like that, blind buying for me is quite foolish.

BTW.....watch your sprays on Red Tobacco. It's pretty powerful stuff! :)

Mancera don't work too well for me and sampled a lot. A huge amount are bad on initial spray and almost all the rest are in a bad common dry down. Both Red Tobacco and Cedrat Boise are in a small group that avoid both issues.... I'm not sure that either are especially "skanky" as much as they are very strong. So not sure how you will rate after more wearings, we will see....

On to L'Autre. PIcked up a partial bottle of vintage. Read the reviews/comments which were pretty scary but the price was so good took a chance. Don't have enough wearings to get a good read on it yet but was surprised that the first couple of times it didn't knock me down and around, or evacuate the neighborhood!!! Also was wondering WTH is SixCats in all the posts on it, sounds like right up your alley!!! Anyway, have realized am also well oversubscribed unless I find some cat lives to add on.... perhaps a small stash of L'autre would do the job of delaying a purchase for a bit? PM if you want and some of it can relocate to maine.....

I haven't tried Red Tobacco, but I own Cedrat Boise and do really like it. Some people try to lump it in with Aventus because of the fruity notes, and I can see that, but it's a nice citrusy-woody frag in my opinion. If you like Aventus, you should like CB, but they're still different enough that no one should really confuse the two and it's not redundant if you already own Aventus or similar.

Thanks sjg. If "Cedrate Boise" is anywhere near as (overall) good quality as "Red Tobacco", it should be a winner!
I would strongly advise against Cedrat Boise, SixCats. It is very sweet and cloying after a while. It's like some sort of artificial citric-based confectionery - the initial impression is quite positive, but soon it becomes sickly and unpleasant. It loses all the freshness.

Go with Red Tobacco, go with what you've already tried and liked.

If you like Red Tobacco and want to try something similar (but slightly better) then Carolina Herrera's Mystery Tobacco is the one you want. If you're willing to stretch to the higher price, I'd say skip Mancera entirely and go for CH Mystery Tobacco.

Hi RR. Well Sir, I must admit, I get a rush when blind buying Fragrances. That being said, I agree with you 100% that blind buying anything other than an inexpensive Fragrance is a very risky gamble. Most, most all of my "blind buys" have yield excellent results (except my one recent fail with Roma Uomo) which isn't a bad scent whatsoever, it's just not a "SixCats!" type of Fragrance. ALL my Caron Fragrances have been "blind buys" and I LOVE every one of my Caron: Yatagan, 3rd. Man, Sport, L'Anarchiste, etc. Ooh, right you are RR, I'm going to go eeeeasy on the "Red Tobacco" sprays.

Hi Wood. Ooh, thank you Sir for your kind offer. I will PM you regarding "L'Autre". Yes Sir, I've been a fan of Diptyque L'Autre for many many years. Presently, I have but a very small amount (decant) of "L'Autre" that I have been saving for a special occasion. I suspect most People would not like "L'Autre" as it is rather odd/unique (as is most of my favorite Fragrances). Sorry to hear Mancera doesn't work well for you woodnotes55. I have a "Gut" feeling that "Red Tobacco" (and maybe Cedrat Boise) are going to be Mancera best bets. Yes indeed "Red Tobacco" VERY strong!

Hi slp. THANK YOU Sir for the "Heads up". I did in fact (after much research) skip the CB and went with RT.
Ooh, thank you for the information on CH MT. I'm going to check that one out for sure!

Agree 100% with everything.

I have a 30ml decant of Red Tobacco I bought for around $27 that's going to last me years, if not decades. One spray of this stuff goes a LONG way.
