ingredients you need in your perfume for stability

Hello,

Once you have put together the scent of your perfume (aka how you want it to smell), what else do you NEED to add to it? Are there preservatives and stabilizing ingredients you MUST add?

Some that come to mind:
- ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE (However I don't want to use this because I have heard it is an endocrine disruptor, correct me if I am wrong).
- Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate
- BHT (antioxidant?)

Are these necessary? Are there ones you would recommend that are safe? Is there one broad spectrum preservative/antioxidant/stabilizer you can use, or is it best to use several?

Ordinarily you don't need to add anything at all. The alcohol itself should be preservative enough.

However, if you're using ingredients that oxidize it's a good idea to add an antioxidant. You'll know which ingredients benefit from this because on the IFRA Standards Library listing under 'Fragrance Ingredient Specification' it says something like "X should only be used when the level of peroxides is kept to the lowest practical level, for instance by adding antioxidants at the time of production. The addition of 0.1% BHT or a-Tocopherol for example has shown great efficiency."

Looking up 'BHT' or 'tocopherol' on the Forum Search should get you more detailed advice from experienced posters.

Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (Uvinul MC80) and Diethylaminio hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate (Uvinul A Plus) are meant to protect a product from UV light damage. Some large commercial manufacturers use them, I presume because they expect their products to sit in shop windows long-term and be shipped around the world under who-knows-what conditions. However I know of no regulation requiring them to be used, and I haven't heard of smaller independent perfumers using them.
