I love a nice sandalwood note. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy Tam Dao EDP?

Diptyque fragrance aren't known for their great projection/sillage as far as I know.

True. I think they claim to use all natural ingredients, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. However, in my opinion, they do tend to release very 'realistic' fragrances that seem quite true to their note lists. So far, I've tried:

L'Eau (3/5)
L'Ombre dans L'Eau EDT (4/5)
Philosykos EDT (2/5)
Tam Dao EDT (4/5)
Do Son EDP (1/5)
Eau de Lierre (1/5)
Eau Duelle EDT (4/5)
Oud Palao (4.5/5)

Oud Palao was the only real exception. From 2 sprays, it lasted the full day/night on me, with near apocalyptic projection. The sillage was more reasonable though.

Diptyque has been a real hit or miss house for me so far. I was/am hoping that Tam Dao EDP would be the first 5/5 from them. At around £80 for 100ml (discounted), the price would be reasonable for a killer sandalwood fragrance. Certainly much cheaper than Sacred Wood or Egoiste Cologne Concentree at least.

Just came here to say that Santal Majuscule is a must try if you're after a sandalwood scent. Though the best one to me so far is Bois des Iles Parfum. Not the EdT / EdP though which I find way too harsh.

I think you'd like Trumpers Sandalwood Cologne.

Wouldn't blind buy the EDP version of a scent if I didn't like the EDT all that much.

TD EDT didn't do it for me either.

Santal Majuscule does sound quite good. I'll definitely try to sample it. I can't remember which version of Bois des Iles I sampled as it was such a long time ago. I think it was the Parfum (that's the one I've marked as 'tried' in the directory anyway), although it may have been the vintage EDT since BN doesn't have a seperate listing for that. Then again, I'm not sure when the EDP was added to the directory, so it could have been that one too I guess. I remember liking it but thinking it was a little too feminine for me, in the top notes at least.

10 Corso Como.

Thanks for the recommendation. I haven't sampled this but I've seen it mentioned here and there ever since I joined BN. The mention of incense in reviews always kind of scared me away. I think I remember reading that it's a fragrance that has changed quite a lot over the years. I wonder how the current formulation is..

I've seen this one being likened to Egoiste in previous threads, but only in the tops notes. Added to my test list. Thanks.

You have to sample before buying it, certainly not a safe blind buy.

Yes, I think a sample or small decant of Tam Dao EDP is my best course of action here.

I'm more than happy to hear more Sandalwood suggestions though, old or new.

Thanks for all the replies.

It might be just me, but the sandlewood in Tam Dao is just not that enjoyable. If I were looking for sandlewood I would be headed over to Rising Phoenix Perfumery for some quality sandlewood.

Thanks for the link. Checking it out.

This one sounds very nice. And reasonably priced for Mysore. Any idea how many wearings you could get from 1g of oil?

I'm not sure how many wearings, but the trick is to apply with a toothpick and use as little as possible until you get the desired effect. PM mikeperez23 here on Basenotes. he has tried and owns many of the Rising Phoenix Sandlewoods. He likes and knows alot about sandlewoods, and I wouldn't hesitate a moment to trust his nose.
mikeperez23 - if you see this post, please chime in with your input.

After you experience Mysore sandlewood, the Austrailian's just don't satisfy IMHO.

I understand they are the same: Eau de Santal is now called Santal.

https://www.florislondon.com/

Oh! I didn't realise that. I noticed different notes (comparing Eau de Santal in the BN directory and Santal on the Floris site, since BN doesn't have any notes listed for Santal) and just presumed they were different. BN lists Eau de Santal as being released in 2002 and Santal in 2003, which I thought was a bit weird.

Thanks for for the info. I'm definitely going to order some Mysore oil from here. I got into a taxi last year that had an amazing sandalwood smell. I asked the driver what it was and he said it was "pure sandalwood oil, very expensive". He even let me try a little on my skin. It was amazing and smelled really great. But it only lasted a couple of hours before it was gone. He said he got it from a scuba diving buddy who makes it himself.

Tam Dao EDP is well worth your sampling. I think it's a much better example of sandalwood than the EDT, which smells to me much more cedar-prominent.

Another one that I can recommend for its sandalwood is Ormonde Jayne Black Gold. Unfortunately, it's priced comparably to gold.

I think I'll definitely get a sample or decant of Tam Dao EDP. Black Gold sounds interesting. Not too feminine to you? The prices I see online for samples of it are crazy!
