Help choose my next Amouage

This really is quite the dilemma, I sympathize because I too have been thinking it's time for a purchase, and Amouage is VERY high on my radar.

I'm wondering if one of you can help me to identify an Amouage I smelled that I cannot recall - it was not smoky/incense-y like Interlude (I know it was not this line). It was either Reflections or Portrayal, what I remember the most is some light florals in the opener (I said to DW "it reminds me of fresh cut rose stems") even though my naive nose may have attributed some other type of floral as being rose like. Any ideas which it could be?

If it was definitely either Reflection or Portrayal, and you recall smokey incense similar to Interlude then it must’ve been Portrayal.

Imo Epic Man is easier to wear than Memoir Man so there’s that. Would you consider any of their attars?

I would definitely consider attars, although it sounds like they may be harder to find? Still leaning toward Epic Man and Memoir Man as the front runners.

For Memoir, I can handle some bitter herbal notes as long as it's not part of a fougere structure, which this does not sound like. Don't like any warm/sweet notes with my bitter/herbal notes. I will definitely be testing this, although might be a few weeks before I get a chance to find them in person. I don't think I've bought any new fragrances since last September, so I'm not in much of a rush.

My budget for this endeavor is about $350, so if I get either Epic or Memoir on FragranceNet (~$200), I'll still have some left over for decants. Thinking I'll get another two in decant form on top of a full bottle. I'm leaning toward Lyric Man for one of the decants.

My picks for recommending would be Memoir Man and Epic Man. I'm not a fan of Memoir because I don't care for wormwood, but if you do, it could be a winner. I remember Memoir wearing incredibly well, especially the way it lingered in the air and on clothes.

Make sure you sample first. I've read that Epic Man went through a reformulation a while ago that swapped out some of the woods in the base & replaced them with norlimbanol.

Norlimbanol is that harsh fake wood/fake incense smell that's everywhere these days, especially in designers.

Reflection is lovely
It really is. It's a compliment magnet too. If I sniff the bottle, I think it's just ok, but it's another Amouage that wears really well. It's especially good for wearing on a date if you're a gentleman (rather than a beastmode-bro) because it's long lasting but not too loud, and after the scent has faded, the base leaves skin smelling particularly nice.

I think my bottle is from 2015 or 16 and I've barely made a dent even though I've worn it a lot. Amouage sprayers barely put out any juice - but that's a good thing. A little goes a long way.

This is another one that went through a reformulation recently (2021 I think - there's a thread about it somewhere here). I need to sample the reformulation. If they tweaked the base for the better, I'd gladly buy another bottle. On the other hand, if they added harsh synth nonsense to the base, they'd have wrecked what made the scent so good in the first place.

What does the man who has it all buy for himself? I've been sitting on some Christmas gift money for a few months now with the intention of buying some expensive and unique fragrance. My collection is big enough now that I've got most categories covered, so at this point I'm looking for something that is very high quality and has a unique blend of notes.

I've finally settled on Amouage as the ideal house to choose from. I already have two fragrances, Jubilation XXV and Interlude 53, so I know I'm a fan of the house DNA. Not really into the freshies at all - I tried Honour Man and it was fine but not the show-stopper style I'm looking for. I've come up with a short list of possible purchases, but there is a lot in Amouage world that I'm not too familiar with like attars or the opus series, so I could use some help narrowing things down here.

This is my list for now, curious to hear what other people think (check my wardrobe to get a sense of my tastes):

Epic Man
Journey Man
Lyric Man
Memoir Man
Myths Man
Memoir Man is a must own.

Why not buy samples from Luckyscent to pick the one you like the best?

My first Amouage purchase was Epic, my favorite from the Amouage boutique in Kuala Lumpur. I liked it’s incense/woods/smoke better than Interlude. The day after I bought it, a pipe broke on the 30rd floor of the hotel where I was staying flooding about 20% of their rooms. I was moved to a room where it smelled like a bottle of Epic had been broken on the floor, or incense like that in Epic had been burned, and after 4 nights of that overpowering stench, I grew to dislike Epic. I still don’t like it due to that memory, but objectively, I remember it was my first love from Amouage.

I like the dry tobacco and spice of Journey, but my wife says “It’s a journey you don’t need to take.” Since then, Xerjoff Naxos and Argos Triumph of Bacchus have become my go-to tobacco fragrances, both far sweeter and vanillic than Journey. And my wife likes Mancera Red Tobacco on me.

Memoir is nice with its dark mint, musty greens, and wet woods, but it doesn’t grab me. I like Fate and Sunshine better.

Lyric is my favorite from your list and is my favorite Amouage, followed by Jubilation, Beach Hut, Bracken, Enclave, Interlude, Sunshine, Reflection, Boundless, Fate, Memoir, Jouney, and Epic. I thought I’d love Overture and nearly shipped it to the US from Europe as a blind buy, but waited until I sampled it. Turns out it’s just okay to my nose.

Bought mine the end of 2021 and it’s lovely stuff. Not sure if it makes a difference but it’s made in Oman. Some folk worry about where it’s produced as some are made in the uk i think. Can’t see it making much odds really.

Memoir Man is great. I prefer Lyric Woman to Lyric Man (own both) and definitely prefer Epic Woman to the Man version - worth trying . . .

Opus II is worth a shot - 'spiced fougere' - I am onto my second bottle.

Good luck with the Attars - the original Homage, Tribute, Santal etc. are pretty much gone, I think but if you can actually try this new line they've released would be interested to hear your thoughts!

Bumping this one last time in case anyone has any more thoughts on attars - either which ones are worth tracking down or just their availability. I'd happily buy a decant, so retail bottles are not the priority for attars anyway.

Otherwise I'll most likely be able to sample in the next week or two and report back with my thoughts. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

Definitely Tribute, first and foremost for me.

Out of those listed, Epic.

Otherwise Opus VI - more exotic and more wearable at the same time. Beach Hut is also worth considering(unique, wearable, versatile, huge performance)

Darn, now I’m regretting not going to Neimans last night for their Amouage event. Some big time people from the brand were going to be there.

But honestly, Im not blown away by this house. A few weeks ago a very friendly SA went through about a dozen different varieties, and while I appreciated this different style of perfume making - and emphasis on deeper scent profiles, alot of them seemed simple and heavy handed. I thought I’d love them, but I was underwhelmed. This was my very first experience with Amouage so I’m not finalizing this opinion. I was given 4 samples which I haven’t gone through yet.

Plus there are the rumors of reformulation. They are going to unisex bottles and have stated an intention to focus heavy on the US market. None of these things sound encouraging IMO.
