hey, i'm a lady from philly who just got really into perfumes in the last year or so.
in high school i wore exclusively gap grass (still love it) and bonne bell vanilla bean (not available for me to smell anymore so i dunno!). in between then and late 2021, i smelled pretty much like dr bronner's peppermint soap, spearmint and lavender essential oils, nature's gate herbal shampoo, etc.
a little over a year ago i was intrigued by a friend's post about an atmospheric indie scent they were wearing and i checked out a bunch of indies. i found some things i liked but i found myself more drawn to things that smelled more like a unified composition and less like an assemblage of notes. i do love a good dirt/woods scent but for the most part i'm not into a lot of atmospherics.
i ended up ordering an "intro to perfume" sample set from surrender to chance and found the first perfume i really loved, hermessence osmanthe yunnan. it smelled like a work of art while also being something i wanted to smell like!
all the while i've ben on a quest to find the one perfume my fairly perfume-adverse husband loves. all he knew was it was popular in the 70s or 80s, and he still sometimes smells it. so i got a "classic perfumes of the 70s" sample set and realized that i really loved a lot of these perfumes. i started out thinking i didn't like "perfumey" "old lady" perfumes but at this point i realized that those are my favorites! what i can't deal with is newer perfumes that have "fresh" dryer sheet-y, iso-e super kinds of smells. people love them and that's cool but i feel like so many otherwise nice perfumes are ruined for me by those notes! i never did find what my husband liked although van cleef and arpels first was the closest so far.
anyway in the last year i spent too much money and assembled a collection of vintage, new formulations of vintage, niche, etc perfumes that i am very happy with and a ridiculous amount of samples that i'm slowly going through. i was drawn to this site because of the vintage-focused forum but i really like the functionality/data part of it too! and i love learning about new perfumes and the chemistry behind perfume and all that stuff so this seems like a perfect place for me!
I love chypres and intimidating green scents as well as some softer things. my top perfumes i reach for are osmanthe yunnan (when i want delicate and pretty), mitsouko (when i want dark/warm/sexy), bandit (when i want to smell mean and tough), jazmin sarai fayoum (when i want to smell like... turmeric? this is also weirdly close to my husband's mystery favorite, according to him).
