Diptyque Eau Lente is without a doubt one of my favorite Diptyque Fragrances and (in general) one of my favorite fragrances period. It's just lovely/beautiful/Artful.

This is an old thread, so there may be a few newer releases that some of the previous posters wouldn't have known about.

That aside, I think Diptyque is a very typical, French fragrance house that is largely underrated. I have tried or owned many of their scents before, but do not currently own any of them.

The most notable to me, given what is currently available, are:

• 34 Boulevard Saint Germain EdT - this is supposed to be a mix of several accords that Diptyque have produced over the years. 10/10 for imagination and actually making it work: I can totally pick up aspects of L'Eau and Eau Lente in this composition
• Benjoin Bohème - benchmark benzoin scent, although quite sweet for my liking
• Do Son EdP - great tuberose fragrance. Nuclear strength in the EdP and an affordable alternative to Carnal Flower
• Eau de Minthé - great take on the fougere genre with a unique modern twist, swapping lavender with mint
• Eau Duelle EdP - benchmark vanilla scent in my books, although it can come across as too sweet for some
• Eau Duelle EdT - slightly toned version of the above EdP, perhaps this could work better for men or those that find the EdP too strong and/or too sweet
• Eau Lente - benchmark opopanax, or sweet myrrh, with a gentle dusting of cinnamon over the top. Unique and blended in a way that it doesn't come across as harsh
• L'Eau - The first scent where it all started. Not totally different to Eau Lente, but definitely resembles a potpourri as per the marketing blurb
• L'Eau Trois - Bone dry smoky myrrh/incense, accented with wild Mediterranean mountain herbs. Unlike any other resinous scent which is typically bathed in gallons of syrup
• L'Ombre dans L'Eau EdP - benchmark fresh rose scent, where you get to experience the scent of the flower and the green aspects from the stem
• Philosykos - benchmark fig scent. Fig you say? Yes! No one has made this scent work like Diptyque IMHO. You get the scent of the fruit, the 'green' accord of the leaf and even the coconut-like milk that oozes out when the fruit is cut fresh from the tree. Delicious!
• Tam Dao EdP - this could easily be called 'woods on steroids'. It's every woody accord you can imagine all rolled into one. Definitely synthetic, it strangely smells different on skin when compared to paper. It has strong similarities to CdG's Wonderwood. The EdP is much better than the EdT with this one
• Vetyverio EdP - A really under-rated vetiver scent, with boat loads of freshness and a unique carrot seed note

One scent that I can definitely rule out from the brand is Volutes. This is just about as horrible as Tobacco Vanille that I simply cannot tolerate.

Thanks for posting that nice list of MPG's and their descriptions. That being said: Really ? Do you really think of MPG being an underrated House ? To me, MPG has always been sort of a "Holy Grail" House. Lucky for me, I was turned onto MPG nearly twenty years ago when I first joined BN by some wonderful old time members. MPG has been a favorite House of mine since about 2003. About a couple of years ago, I was VERY lucky to have FINALLY (after about a five year search) find and purchase a (mostly full) bottle of MPG "Eau des Iles" from a very nice BN member. Eau des Iles is one of my most prized Fragrances to be sure. Another favorite MPG of mine is L'Autre which I think just wonderful (but is an acquired taste). I must say rum, now you have me really curious about MPG Volutes. I should try/sample Volutes because, when I see (in the same thread) that one member LOVES Volutes and another person (yourself) finding it horrible/cannot tolerate, well, my Cat like curiosity makes me wanting to find out why the LOVE & HATE lol.

These are my two choices too. I've smelled the entire line and there's some really good ones in it but I'm always drawn back to these two. Specifically the Tam Dao EDP. It might be the best still in production sandalwood fragrance on the market atm (so many good ones have been discontinued).

Diptyque is an interesting house. Many of its scents are carefully, thoughtfully created, but they just don't really stand out like you'd hope they would.

Philosykos (EDP, preferably) is still the reference fig scent, and is probably the high-water mark for the house's current offerings.

Eau de Minthé and Vetyverio are pretty solid, too.

Volutes sound amazing. Now I want to smell it....

Speaking as a tobacco enthusiast, it's... okay. For this style of upscale French perfumery, it's very middle of the road: just classy enough that you can't complain too much, but still forgettable.

I feel the same way about Eau Duelle. So many houses have done vanilla scents now and Diptyque's take on it seems a bit basic and thin.

As others have stated, I think they are almost all very nice and well done but none have ever moved me enough to buy. There is something "just nice" about the line, where I'd be happy to wear many of them if that's all I had to choose from, yet in all my years buying fragrance I've never bought a Diptyque.

That said, I visited this thread to report that I am very tempted to pick up Ilio this summer. I smelled it last summer and something about the nostalgia of revisiting it again now got to me. I like how it really rides the line between typical summer categories, balancing floral with fresh with citrus with a hint of suntan lotion smell without tipping too far into any one category. Longevity isn't great but it's a very happy making scent!

Two others I would get if I ever get around to it is Tempo which is a goldilocks patchouli, just earthy enough without going hippie but also nicely warmed and smoothed out without becoming goopy or gourmand. I also think Oud Palao is a standout but something about the dry down goes flat for me.

I kind of feel about Diptyque the way Hansel feels about Sting:

I’m going to agree with you, and not just because you’re my brother.

I will add though, that I’m finding myself enjoying equally the oval bottle EDT. The older square bottle is essentially just like the oval bottle EDP, so folks are good either way in that regard if they’re wanting the EDP experience. The oval bottle EDT, while clearly the same and near identical scent, has a little less going on. The EDP has a bit more spice and almost nutty presence, with a smoothness like the finest Belgian chocolate on my skin. The EDP is overall the better scent to discerning aficionado. However I think people can just go for whatever one they can get the better deal on and still have the inherent Tam Dao experience. Tam Dao is the only scent I own from this house, in both EDP and EDT concentrations.
