I read about an upcoming fragrance from this brand Chatillon Lux called Lamplight Penance on Luca Turin's blog. Sounds great.

I went to their website and saw two other fragrances that caught my eye: Rose Santal (Eau de Toilette) and Santal Auster (Parfum Extrait).

Anyone own these/sample these and wish to comment on them? The price points seem very affordable - and they sell 5 ml samples.

I have sampled just about all Chatillon Lux scents, mostly because I am a wet shaver and his aftershaves are spectacular. I can't shed a ton of light on these two specifically but Chatillon Lux is worth checking out. If you sign up for the news letter he runs sales regularly. His blog is good also, if you dig back in it there was an entry last year specifically about Santal Auster

Shawn's scents are pretty unique. I only had a small sample of the Santal Auster and from what I remember it sat close to the skin like most extraits do (on me) and longevity was superb. From what I recall he took the aftershave base and fortified it, gave it more of a backbone. It's a seasonal release.

Rose Santal I have the least experience with, I have a sample but haven't used it. All his EdT's have excellent longevity

I would add a little to the other scents. My nose is still learning so I am not the best at describing things but also not the worst.

I use Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli. It's a fabulous simple scent and I use it the most in the summer. The rose is bright as well as the yuzu. Both are slightly grounded by the patchouli

Gratiot League Square is a spicy leather. I'm very hit or miss with leather but I like this one

Bon Vivant has alot going on so it's hard to describe. My best attempt would be a dirty citrus. What I mean is think Terre d'Hermes EdP. It doesn't smell like TdH, it is it's own scent, just in the same vein, great for fall weather.

Then I most definitely will be buying some samples when the new scent is released.

Anyone smell the new one yet, it came out last week? I checked the site today but I don't see samples available to buy. I might email them about that...I am not interested in blind buying it.

Hey Mike, we just added the 5 mL size bottles to the product page yesterday. Hope you enjoy it!

Just ordered a 5ml sample of Lamplight Penance.
$15.00 plus a super reasonable shipping of $2.66 to my location
I'll post my thoughts when it arrives.

Turin said "a disturbingly discordant accord of fruit and leather notes that feels like a chance encounter of objects belonging to different lives" about Lamplight Penance.
That sounded interesting, but just turned out to smell weird and disturbingly unappealing for me. I sampled the day I got and never wanted to smell it again.

I will provide a counterpoint to thebeck. There is indeed dissonance within the fragrance. The berries, liquor, and leather seem to be reluctant collaborators at times. This does, to me, produce a rather singular result that is difficult to describe. A scent light brown if decribed as a color and thick. Inviting and austere at the same time. A scent that compels my attention. This fragrance is not pretty and is certainly not common, which is why I am intrigued by it. If you prefer perfumes that simply smell good and offer no challenges then this is not for you. This is not for everyone but if you enjoy the challenges presented by something unique then give it a try.

That's fair and true. I'm just done with challenging scents. Not only do I want to smell good, I enjoy getting compliments, and I'm afraid Lamplight Penance would get a "you stink" comment.

A very valid and understandable point. The people that surround me have become accustomed to my Hindi oils so Lamplight Penance poses no threat.

I was enjoying Ottoman Empire one day. I was in a grocery store merchandising the tortilla section. Along came my competition vendor, and he said something smelled like moldy tortillas. There were no moldy tortillas, and I didn't want to say it was me he was smelling. Haven't worn Ottoman Empire since.

Lol, Ottoman Empire smells of many things. Moldy tortillas is not among them. Its interesting what a person perceives when they encounter a smell they are unfamiliar with. My young nephew once claimed that I smelled like peanut butter while wearing Monte Cristo. I still happily wear it.
