Best “enveloping” or good projection fragrances to smell on yourself

This is going to sound like an odd question, so bear with me.

I was enjoying the thread on enjoying fragrance while alone, to the point I want to be conscious of potential “me time” buys. It does perk up my time alone when I smell a scent I like on myself, whether doing deep work, taking a walk alone, or sitting on the couch reading.

I thought that a good “me time” scent might have strong projection, something whose opening note happily fills one’s nose and lungs and you can take the scent in. @imm0rtelle wrote some good notes about it being better for your perfume not to arrive in a room before you, but a scent with good projection is not always a strong, powerful smelling scent. I’m thinking of projection because it sounds good to be in a personal bubble of scent during me time (even though you stop being conscious of the scent at some point) and it’s also great when your partner also particularly likes that scent on you.

I like Terre d’Hermes, for example, and particularly like Intense Vetiver and it’s citrus grassy scent for this context. I also like Tom Ford Oud Wood for its sweet woody scent for this context. I imagine a number of fresh favourites also fit.

Curious if there are specific favourites for the gym, for long walks alone, and for sitting alone.

Anyone enjoy perfume along the lines above, and any specific picks?

Hey @kreteknose , I think it's a fun question.
I mainly wear my fragrances to smell on myself but I also like them to project some distance so I often prefer EDTs. I can get frustrated because I quickly go nose blind to my own scent bubble and wish I could smell it fresh as though a friend had just arrived wearing it.

The way I get round this is just by applying a small amount to one wrist and then I get wafts of it through the day. To me this is the equivalent of putting on a music album to enjoy privately.

Currently my favourite for personal use is Eau De Guerlain. When it reheats and billows up later in the day it's pure bliss.

Mancera Hindu Kush is a great fragrance for what you describe. Very enjoyable, lasts all day, comforting in a warm way.

I do this too!

But why EDTs?
Generally EDTs disperse more whereas EDPs are more dense in structure and stay closer to the body.

That's been my experience with Terre d'Hermes, Guerlain Heritage and Habit Rouge. The EDP versions are richer, holding closer to the skin and don't create as much of a scent cloud.

A counter example to this would be Bois Imperial which is an EDP and has the biggest scent cloud in my collection, so it isn't always the case.

For me, these would all be very different fragrances.

-Gym: isn’t 100% “me” time, as many people are in my gym. So, my fragrances, if any at all, will just be soft and clean so as to not distract or offend anyone else. There’s a guy that goes to my gym that bathes in Acqua di Gio before coming in and it’s quite annoyingly strong and distracting. Others make negative comments about him and some have complained to management. Which leads me to… the gym isn’t really ‘me’ time for fragrance.

-Long Walks Alone: when you say alone, do you mean without a friend or companion or in an area completed away from other people? If it’s alone in a secluded area, then the fragrance could literally be anything. If I’m going to be passing people or through busy areas but alone (without a companion) then I’ll still be somewhat thoughtful about what I’m wearing. If I’m completely alone in the countryside, it could be literally anything. On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend wearing copious amount of real deer musk on a “me” time walk through the Sahara.

-Sitting Alone: if by that you mean sitting alone at home, then any fragrance is fair game. I like to use those moments to wear those fragrances that I enjoy but repulse my wife.

I often prefer EDPs (or EDP-strength) fragrances when alone. Sometimes, as has been mentioned, these are also fragrances that I love and that project well, but that my wife doesn’t care for. Across a broad spectrum and in no particular order:
—Jaipur EDP
—Terre d’Hermes Parfum
—Quorum
—Joop! Homme

And those that my wife likes and that I often wear for myself anyway for their fabulous scent bubbles:
—Dior Homme Intense
—Giorgio for Men
—Aramis
—Lauder for Men

I'll add a fragrance example... Just earlier this week I wore Mond by Slumberhouse for the first time. The opening was good but weird, then the drydown was very lovely and enveloping. Kept getting wafts of it throughout the evening.

Guilty Absolute smells like heaven to me after it's been activated by body heat and/or oils. It has the best second-day performance that I've ever smelled in a men's fragrance.
