Japan talk made me wonder if in the middle east natural ouds or synthetic oud is more common.

Am I of the very few who didn't find the oud in Beauty and the Beast that skanky? My wife really enjoyed it too and would happily encourage me to get a bottle if I didn't have so many oud rose combos already. I'm pretty surprised its still available tbh.
I don't find the oud in Beauty and the Beast that skanky either...

Lol I’m from Japan and I wear 2-3 sprays of ALD on trains and restaurants. Too bad if they don’t like it. XD
Only place I’ll refrain from spraying myself would be on planes where they wouldn’t be able to run away. XD
I guess I might not wear musky perfumes like SM3 to a expensive sushi bar though.
I’d wear history of Indian oud though. XD

By the way, history of Indian oud is godly.
It’s boozy, fruity, nutty, leathery, and sometimes a bit chocolate depending how on the day with slight fermented note running underneath.
It used beat out in rotation among other perfumes from ALD and EO but now I don’t want to waste it. 😣

It’s not that Japan hates perfume, it’s just that anything perceived to be “loud” is seen as a nuisance. It can be anything that disrupts the social harmony. Loud clothing, conversation, perfume, etc. All this depends on the context of course. If you’re just going to a bar or club at night, a loud perfume is not offensive at all. In general though, most Japanese likes clean and inoffensive smells and stay away from any smell that could give a bad impression

There’s many Japanese stores and fashion houses that sell their own line of fragrances such as cologne and incense, so you can check those out to see what is acceptable if curious
Yes, that's the reason, I just didn't feel like going through a thorough explanation of the Japanese cultural preferences on the Areej le Dore forum. Thank you for going all the way for me. ありがとうでございます

All I know is that I got kicked off a train, via looks (lol), for wearing a rather mild fragrance. Unfortunately for me that was the only fragrance that I decanted for that trip… but I learned my lesson. On my second trip, I didn’t wear ANY fragrance, but that was the trip that I found out about the tattoos.

I suppose everyone has their own experiences.

How incredibly intolerant. I always found the Japanese quite polite tbh but maybe its a different kettle of fish when they're in their homeland.

There's a brief burst of savoriness at the open (the "cheese" some don't like?), but after that, it turns into one of ALD's more wearable IMO. Easily my favorite from the History of Attar collection, but as you mentioned, most ALD buyers probably have several nice rose/ouds already. IIRC, it was relatively expensive, too.

You know, I found them quite tolerant (and very friendly when talking one to one)) but it was only a few cases of not knowing the culture or how to respond in an inoffensive way. The perfume was one case, another was how to let someone pass from inside seats on the train. One time, a gentleman expected me to get up to allow him to exit and I simply shifted to allow room for him to pass… this was offensive (as described to me by a local) and I didn’t know it. Things like that.

Yup, I will be visiting again next year for another business trip… and yeah, I won’t be wearing fragrances since I don’t know what the local definition of ‘loud’ is compared to my own definition. So I won’t be wearing fragrance.

Let’s try an experiment. Do 5 sprays of Interlude on one arm, and 5 of Mancera Red Tobacco on the other……and if you end up in jail, I promise to come bail you out, lol…..if they can physically get close enough to handcuff you that is!

Yeah let’s not try that.

Although I bet the food is awesome in prison over there.

You may want to look into some of the Di Ser line (Japanese brand) if you haven't done so already. You think they would know their market.

If you go light on the trigger with just 2 sprays max, I don't think something like OE4 and RO2 would offend anyone, OE4 dry down to a powdery floral scent after 20min or so, while RO2 is chocolatey cacao with that woody and ambery note in the dry down, the Hindi Oud facet subsided pretty quickly. Neither one of them are obnoxious, RO2 is quite a bit quieter than OE4 with 2 sprays, and they don't project too far.

Yeah I haven’t tried either yet, but I think I’m just going to be happy smelling like Tokyo bananas (from eating so many) next time I visit.

It would be nice to experience this for myself if the bottled ever ship out.

LOL...I think you should do this experiment on your next visit to Japan, Cheetah... ;)

Those two fragrances are nuclear, "and" might be considered a "nuclear" threat in Japan, based on this conversation.🤣
