Hi everyone. I have just acquired alpha terpineol and I am smelling ir for first time diluted at 10% in alcohol.
TGSC defines it as clean, sweet and delicate, bur the fact is that mine reminds me of something like dry urine or toilete like smelling. Is my alpha terpineol wrong or is that its actual smell? Thanks

Purity is paramount for this product. Impurities color the odor profile.

Are you sure that you have alpha terpineol (aka Lindenol)? Lindenol is a purified isomer and smells of Lilac (it is found in the head space of Lilac). There is also a much cheaper, generic "Terpineol" available. This is made of a mixture of various isomers and related chemicals; smells sort of Pine like, and is often used in fragrances found in household products. It is very cheap which is why it is found in such products.

In the profile it says 98 purity and alpha terpineol although the price is very cheap, 30 gr have a value of 7,30€. The problem is that I have never smelled this material before so I have no way to know with precision if there is a problem with the purity of the producto

I have the IFF version sold as Lindenol (which is 3 times as expensive as yours, sold by Hekserij) but I think get what you mean.
To my nose (10% on a blotter) it's a mix of WD40, urine and floral/pine notes. All relatively weak, not in your face, but all definitely there.

I have the same experience with different bottles (purchased one year apart at different suppliers) so I doubt there's something wrong with mine; maybe it's because we perceive this scent differently?

On a sidenote: an unpleasant smell (of an isolated material) is not necessarily a bad thing in perfumery.

I love it!

Lol! My bad. Mine is Tilianol Super.

So, Alpha Terpineol / Lindenol / Tilianol Super.

Maybe is the Way We perceive it. The smell I perceive is totally equal as you describe it.
And, as you said, the smell of it in isolation does not mean that it can't be useful in combination, so I will try combining with other materials and ser the effects. Thanks!

I will ask my supplier. As far as I Know everything they sell is ok for fine fragrances, but your point seems to be important. Thank
Sometimes a cruder version could be of use too, just for different effects. Terpineol’s odor should be tested before you buy a large batch, that’s the best guarantee.

Thanks... I just found out that the "Terpineol" that I purchased "because it was in so many accords" is actually mixed isomers Terpineol :cautious:. Can't wait to make a toilet bowl cleaner accord with it.

It's typically used to mask horrible odors by having a relatively unpleasant odor with its masking and piercing effect. Nothing is worse than a 'bathroom' smell and a pleasant smelling fragrance at the same time , vomit inducing to some. o_O

On the flip side, a-terpineol is useful, it's all about relative dosing and bringing other similar ingredients in front of it such as DHM.

Very strange that you smell this in Lindenol. Lindenol has a very clean smell, and the pine note is very delicate with nothing of wd40 and urine.

The terpineol I mentioned, the grade used mainly in household products is OK for fine fragrances. Perfumes found in functional products are created by perfumers too.

Depends on the quality.
But I smell this (slight WD40 and urine notes) in IFF's Lindenol; I thought that is a high quality version. What are your thoughts about that?
