Hey, i think we have a misunderstanding. let me maybe expand and explain since everyone had different experience and scent associations.
"It sounds to me like you equate oud with smelling like skank." - i dont think of it as a skank, moreover, i yet have to try an oud that smells like poop or barnyard, and my words in original comment meant that what "other people" might think of oud or composition as skanky, barnyard...etc - is not something i am scared of, or something i will find as that.
i do have OE1 pure parfum myself, and i didnt say its bad, but from a personal perspective i dont find it as amazing one, along with oud maximus, which i as well have. i am just on a quest to find an oud centered perfume that i like without going bankrupt by bying full bottles blind, or by wasting money on saples that might be expensive. As for OE1, it is cold fluid leather to me, with furry texture and added rose and tobacco. that how i see it. Maximus is fermented rose oud combo backed by alot of ingredients that i cant break down separately but overall its pleasant composition, not shallow. Problem that I have is: after initial burst, it seems to mellow down on me and remain a little hazy. and same Haziness seems to occur with OE1 as well, whether its my skins reaction to musk or whatever it is, i dont know, but that is an aspect that i dont quite like. I hope this helps a little in explanation.
So, when "Robin Oud" mentioned that "really love oud monarch and Maximus though" and he added OE1 and Russian oud are among his top ones, i wanted to know how can he describe Emperor Hind in comparison to these 3 compositions that i as well have, and, Russian oud that i have somewhat an idea about. dont know about you, but when others compare fragrances, or elements to each other, it assists me in analyzing scent, and have an idea, should i shell out on it or not. I.E. bel ami and M by puredistance, they are different perfumes in general, but they share bones, difference is quality of materials, how smoothed out M is, with more depth, clarity....etc. There are parallels that people can draw that will help me and maybe others.
As you have mentioned, Hindid oud can be skanky, and that is the element in Emperor hind, along with amber, musk, ambergris, hyrax, civet. components listed in this perfume i am familiar with and have in pure form, and they can create, once again as some might say, a skanky composition, but at the same time, it might be composition that i am looking for. It has patchouli, resins, jasmine, woods, and overall it is very interesting composition on paper, and fits into an image of something in your face, authoritarian, strong perfume that has clarity in it. and on this note, let me as well add, that by authoritarian and rude i mean: masculine, strong smelling perfume, dense, something that people dont smell often and catches their attention in a pleasant way. Example of such perfume are: Interlude, M, BdP, Oro by bois 1920, diaghilev, Maai. Not belonging to this category would be something like : Agar ebene, L'instant EDT, encre noir, acqua celestia, definitely Oud monarch, at least on my skin.
As far as what you said: "I will say though that if Oud Maximus, Oud Monarch, and E O N 1 aren’t considered oud forward fragrances to your nose I don’t know how much I can be of help", they have oud in it, i cant deny that, and its nice oud, but i would hope to see a bit stronger presence of oud with more clarity, but without going into pure oud territory. Example would be Oud luwak, oud in there is main and in your face player, but i dont see support from other notes. Idea that would be in my mind for great oud that would suit the bill is Oud note from luwak, but placed with opening notes of M. i think that would be fantastic. but not limited to only that combination.
Phew, so thats it, hope this makes sense, i tried to make it into a logical chain. so once again, if that comparison, and a bit more in depth review can be done, i would really appreciate it
