I am a collector of masculine fragrances. Most of them are Vintage bottles from some years ago. I recently purchased a few Vintage bottles of Chanel fragrances. They are Pour Monsieur And A Gentleman's Cologne by Chanel. I'd like some info on the Gentleman's Cologne because I'm intrigued.

There's been a fair amount of discussion on here regarding Chanel Pour Monsieur, A Gentleman's Cologne/Aftershave and Chanel for Men.

They are in essence exactly the same fragrance simply marketed in different markets under different names and timeframes. As a general rule, A Gentleman's Aftershave/Cologne and Chanel for Men came before Chanel Pour Monsieur but it depends on the market. In the EU/UK it certainly did but that may not apply to the US market.

A Gentleman's Cologne is essentially the same as Pour Monsieur Eau de Toilette.

The concentree, though, the bottle pictured on the right, is different (i.e., not the same as Pour Monsieur cologne, edt, Chanel for Men, A Gentleman's Cologne). "Concentree" means nutmeg, etc.

So, to be clear, the one that says A Gentleman's Cologne is Pour Monsieur, and the one that says Pour Monsieur isn't.

A Gentleman's Cologne is one of the earlier iterations of Chanel Pour Monsieur, specifically during the mid 1960s and early 1970s era.

Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree is a different scent compared to the Pour Monsieur EDT and its earlier iterations.

i had a couple of bottles of very old Chanel for Men splash bottles i sold both of them not long after i bought them . they where nice but not for me
I've come across this kind of sentiment before and it makes Pour Monsieur a slightly divisive fragrance. You either love or you don't much care for it. Personally I love it and think it's one of the very best masculine fragrances ever created. But I've also heard people describe it as 'an old woman's perfume smell'.

Surely by that standard, all fragrances are divisive.
Yes...

All fragrances are subjective, but not all would be considered divisive. I have plenty of fragrances that I like but don't love in the same way I love Pour Monsieur. It seems to be one of those fragrances you either love or hate there doesn't seem to be a lot in the middle.

It may be I’ve been blinded by my affection for it, but I haven’t noticed much disdain for Chanel pour Monsieur. I mean, all @yourthemannowdog said was, “nice, but not for me,” and that’s the harshest comment about it I’ve seen.

Actually, I don’t think Chanel has any terribly divisive fragrances in its catalog, in the sense of generating widespread hostility. It’s not like, say, Dior Poison, which excites passions at both extremes. If anything, Chanel might be faulted for being risk-averse—at least, for the last 30 years. (That last comment is probably more divisive than any Chanel fragrance.)

Hi all,

Chanel is my favourite house by a street!

You guys recently helped with some info on a bottle of Antaeus I bought (Thank you!!)

I love Pour Monsieur and recently bought a quarter bottle of A Gentleman's Spray After Shave (photos attached).

It smells amazing, perhaps a bit brighter than my current (old) bottle of Pour Moniseur.

Can anyone provide more info on this one please? (age etc)

Thanks in advance, great website and some brilliant advice on here!!

Batch code anywhere? Usually these are blind stamped into the box somewhere. I have A Gentleman's Aftershave without one so not all have them.

Without further information, probably from the 1970's maybe early 1980's. AFAIK these were launched in the mid/late 60's. Advert is from 1977.

Thank you,

I can't see any batch code on box or bottle. I did wonder if the 887 on the bottom of the box was the batch code but maybe not.

But late 70s to early 80s given that the advert was in the box?
