A question about Rochas Moustache EDP

I recently got this (the 2018 EDP) from a fellow Basenoter, and I love it.

There is, however, a very odd smelling note that I can't pinpoint. It is present from beginning to end, but most intensely in the opening.

I can't describe it other than saying that it is a tiny bit medicinal, a bit gourmand, and, while not off-putting, rather strange. In any case, it is not like anything I have smelled before.

Could it be the pink pepper? I do not think I own any other fragrance with any pink pepper notes in it, so maybe that's it. Or could it be a particular combination of notes?

My first suspect is benzoin. The benzoin in Body Kouros is often described as medicinal, although in that fragrance, the medicinal aspect is amplified by both eucalyptol and "camphor wood".

Benzoin is slightly gourmand, with vanilla aspects. It's a strange beast. If it's in high concentration, it will be prominent from opening to drydown.

I'm sniffing both fragrances now, and I think it may be benzoin you're thinking of. The pink pepper is prominent, too, though. Could be both of them.

There are supposedly benzoin AND vanilla notes here, so it could be the combination of those plus the pink pepper. And there is also patchouli in there!

It's a unique fragrance, both traditional and slightly bizarre, but in a good way. It's a love for me.

I even think I detect a bit of homage to the old Moustache and kinship to the "new original" EDT in it! I'm very happy to own both of the new ones.

Hi all,

I've been looking at the possible purchase of "Moustache" for some time. I wonder if "Moustache" might be a SixCats! Fragrance ?
All I have to hear is, that there is some sort of "weirdness" to "Moustache" and I'm interested lol. I have an older bottle of Rochas "Femme" and like it!

This is my first Moustache, as well as my first Rochas. I have not tried the original 1949 release or any of the other iterations (I think there is the Concentrée as well as another one, or maybe I'm confused).

It could very well be a @SixCats fragrance --but it's not animalic, which as I understand it is more your jam. This is more on the medicinal side and just really bizarre, but in a way I like!

I'm inclined to go with @Marty McFly here --more an accord than a note, particularly because it changes over time, and it could very well be that combo. Though the pink pepper may play a part in it as well.

Hi Salumbre, you are correct that my jam/real love is "Animalic" type Fragrances however, that being said, I'm all about "bizarre/unusual/odd" Fragrances. In fact, I recently researched twenty of my favorite Fragrances in order to understand exactly which style/types/notes that I most love. Heck, I must admit, I was rather surprised to learn that "Animalic" was only a small part of the big picture.

Much to my surprise, the most common theme turned out to be: AMBER (Spicy/Wood) AROMATIC(Spicy/Green/Woody) and WOODY (Aromatic/Chypre/Ambre). Also some LEATHER and CHYPER (Fruity) Fragrances.

Aside from my usual "Animalic" favorites (such as) Marlou d'ambiguite/L'Artisan Dzing!/MGP Eau des Iles/Bogart Furyo, Serge Lutens MKK etc.
I must admit over the years, I VERY much enjoy/have enjoyed (original) YOHJI YAMAMOTO, Diptyque L'Autre, McQueen Kingdom, original YSL Kouros, SMN Nostalgia, Caron Yatagan, Caron L'Anarchiste, Masque Milano Montecristo, Guerlain Mitsouko, Lalique Encre Noire, Santa Maria Novella Marescialla, Dali, L'Occitane Baux, Pinaud Lilac Vegetal, SMN Peau d'Espagne, SMN Acqua di Cuba, etc. etc. etc.

I find the above list of above Fragrances all being rather "unique" (and wonderful). My point being, perhaps I'm not the "Animalic" Animal I thought I was. Ummmm. Thanks Salumber.

Well, if that's the case, I think Moustache is going to be right up your alley!

Re Montecristo: I'm on the fence about that one. It's... REALLY funky, and not necessarily in a good way...
